DV Mission is the 48 hour film challenge which takes place annually in Portsmouth. We are given the genre, title of the film and a line of dialogue we have to use. Having entered last year with our team ‘Lazy Nerd’, we had so much fun making our Weird Western we had to enter this year as well.
On the Friday night we found out what our mission would be:
Genre: Steam Punk
Title: Low Head
Line of Dialogue: What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.
The film could be no longer than 2 minutes, and had to be ready to hand in by 5pm Sunday.
For those who don’t know what Steam Punk is, it’s set in an era when Steam Power is still in use, but technology that exists today has been invented (so steam powered computers, that kind of thing).
With that, we set off to the nearest pub and began brainstorming some ideas. After much deliberating we decided to go down the silly route and have some fun with it. So we went with a James Bond style spoof set in Victorian times, whereby Bond aka Jones has to go by steam train to his exotic location where he meets the Bond girl, who betrays him, and then has stop the evil Steve from blowing up world with his steam powered atom bomb Lowhead device.

We used a jib for filming the Bond ‘girl’ (who was actually the lovely Anthony) coming out of the water in Old Portsmouth for our Bond meets Bond girl scene.
Eventually finished filming at about 10:30pm, and our brilliant editor Bailey stayed up til 5am cutting together the rough edit, then back to us Sunday morning where he somehow managed cut it down from 6 minutes to 2 minutes. We also created some foley effects, found the music and Bailey made all the special effects (including blowing up the world).
Here’s a gallery of images from the weekend:
